Week 10 Reflection: Mistakes

In week 10, I learnt  social media mistakes can be devastating, both in a personal and business sense.
There are many companies make mistakes every year. For instance, in 2016 the person in charge of LG’s French Twitter account sent out the following tweet playing off of consumers’ fears that the new iPhone 6 would bend and break in their pockets. The French translated text reads, “Our smartphones don’t bend, they are naturally curved.” The rub: the English at the bottom reads “via Twitter for iPhone.” However, I do not think all of companies will admit and apologize to the public after that. The first thing a company tries to do is to remove anything inappropriate online and try to deny what they did wrong. In 2008, many Chinese companies which produce baby formula were found add toxic substance illegally that will cause babies malformed even died. Only a few companies including Sanlu apologized to the public. Please see China milk Scandal.

Because of strong competitions, companies may use social media to slander others or lower its products quality. Or companies did not manage their social media very well and can be easily attacked online. There are a few reasons I found that a company may have social media mistakes:
  • Bad customer service, product failings
  • Environmental or ethical issues
  • News that spreads fast and it isn’t always true
  • The last negative comment made about the brand may well be the first search result.
Every company may make mistakes. Some are small while some are fatal. However, it is really important to reduce the chance of making mistakes. Most importantly, a company should dare to admit the mistakes already mistake and think about how to correct them. There are some solutions that a firm can use on social media to avoid mistakes:
  • Double-check everything before post.
  • Invest in better security.
  • Be aware of everything about the company.
  • Try not be involved in politics.
  • Try to get negative comments off the first page of search results.
  • Admit the mistake you already made.
  • To be prepared, and to plan a response in the event of an attack
  • Keep maintaining an authentic, honest social presence.
The article '29 Of The Biggest Corporate Brand Social Media Flubs' I found told me different kinds of mistakes companies made.
